Your Friends Can Keep You Healthy

Social relationships have a huge impact on both your physical and mental health. Having friends who enjoy activities like walking, cycling, swimming or other healthy pursuits can make it much easier to stick to your wellness goals.

“When your social group is part of your healthy lifestyle, it makes adopting and sticking to those good habits feel much more natural and fun,” explains Hayley Flott, PDRMA Wellness Consultant.

Being around others who make healthy choices can be downright contagious! You want to surround yourself with people who are a positive influence on your decisions. Your “tribe” should include friends who motivate  and encourage you to pursue overall wellness.

Staying a-Live(ly)

There’s a lot of research available on the importance of strong social connections. For instance, studies show that adults with the fewest social ties face more than double the risk of death compared to those with the most social ties. And individuals — with documented medical conditions such as heart  disease — who are socially isolated had a 2.4-times-greater risk of cardiac death than their more socially connected peers. These statistics underscore the vital role social connections play in long-term wellness.

Social Support

Most importantly, the quality of your social ties can be a determining factor for good health. "Strong social support can significantly affect your mental health by reducing the negative impact of stress and fostering a sense of meaning and purpose in your life,” adds Flott. “Supportive peers can make it not only acceptable, but entirely enjoyable, to be active and achieve your health goals.”

Try It — You’ll Like It!

Perhaps one of the unexpected benefits of your social network is the opportunity to try something new, especially if a friend suggests it. Your friends are a fantastic resource for discovering a new recipe, getting a personal trainer recommendation or finding your next great read. That’s how the best ideas go viral!

It also can be truly uplifting to become part of a community that promotes holistic wellness, such as a yoga class or a martial arts group. And once you start, you might enjoy it so much that you’ll continue to participate! You can also find peer support by joining a book club, support groups, religious associations or business groups like your local chamber of commerce or professional society.

Strong friendships literally are a powerful tool for a healthier and happier life. By relying on your social circle for motivation, support and new experiences, you're not just building bonds — you're actively investing in your well-being. So reach out, connect and let your friends help you thrive!
