Training Benefits Every One, Every Time

The secret weapon in a successful risk management strategy is effective training, according to Andrew Cabrera, CPRP, Parks Operations Manager, Winnetka Park District. “Training is a great tool for running a successful operation — by staying up to date on the latest trends, ongoing safety concerns and new technology. If done right, training doesn’t have to be a boring process that employees feel is a burden. I think that’s the key when encouraging members to keep up with PDRMA trainings and training in general.”

“Consistent training gives us great information to bring back to our agency to share with part-time, seasonal and some full-time staff who don’t attend trainings regularly,” notes Cabrera. “We require routine training for our parks department, camp staff, recreation staff and others to keep everyone sharp and educated.”

Tips to Encourage Participation

Training is most effective when employees actively participate. Cabrera offers these tips:

  • Keep training short and to the point. This reminds staff that although it is training, it will be short, informative, and they can walk away armed with new information to help them safely complete their daily tasks, while feeling a sense of accomplishment.
  • Use multiple presenters to deliver training and keep people engaged. Split up the training among team members so they can master a portion of the training and deliver it to the group. It makes the training interesting, keeps employees engaged, and no one person has to take on the full training.
  • Encourage staff to attend trainings to earn CEUs. This is important if your agency requires it and can be an added incentive.

PDRMA Training Faves

“The building intruder training PDRMA offers is outstanding and provides a ton of great info on keeping buildings and everyone inside them safe,” he continues. “Any trainings PDRMA contracts with Tom Grey are also fantastic. He brings a wealth of knowledge and real-world experience to the table.” Cabrera also cites the importance of understanding and abiding by the CORE 6 principles.
