Slip Trip and Fall Survey Results Show Improvement

The results are in! Recently we assigned 970 slip, trip and fall self-assessments to agencies — and got an amazing 98-percent completion rate!

“Completing these self-assessments is essential to reducing accidents and improving risk management performance throughout the membership,” says Tim Lenac, Risk Management Services Supervisor. “With such a high response rate, we have accurate data for comparison to the 2021 self-assessment results.”

For 2024, each agency will review their self-assessment results and develop Action Plans for problem areas that could lead to slip, trip and fall injuries.

Overall, the self-assessment data showed three areas where members still need to reduce incidents of slips, trips and falls:

  • Documented inspections of ladders and step stools prior to each use. Remember that PDRMA offers a Ladder Alternative Reimbursement Program to help members reduce injury risks when working above ground level. And since March is National Ladder Safety Month, it’s the perfect time to do an inspection, explore ladder options and ensure you’re ready for the year ahead.
  • Highlight curbs and other elevation changes to warn of the difference. It’s important to be vigilant when identifying these areas. While some elevation changes are obvious (curbs and stairs) there are others — such as tree roots pushing through asphalt in a parking lot — that develop so gradually, it’s easy to miss them transitioning into a hazard. Conduct regular inspections, document the findings and remain diligent.
  • Apply slip-resistant materials in showers, restroom flooring and other areas expected to be wet. PDRMA offers a Coefficient of Friction Testing Program twice a year if there are area(s) at your agency that would benefit from a professional evaluation. Contact your Risk Management Consultant to arrange a test, and then apply for reimbursement after you’ve taken corrective action to eliminate the hazard.
