Cultivating Strong Relationships in a Hybrid World

Many of us are now working in a hybrid environment, which can make it challenging to create meaningful connections with our colleagues.

Don’t let physical distance be a reason for being distant in your relationship with a coworker. Be mindful of things like time zones and scheduling preferences, so you know when it’s a good time to connect. Try to accept — graciously — whatever their schedule constraints are, even if they’re different from yours.

Get to Know Your Colleagues

You can create a close relationship with your colleagues who have hybrid schedules the same way you connect with people who work in the office — through those casual “water cooler” conversations. Look for those “get to know each other” opportunities even if you’re not physically in the same building — sign into a call a few minutes early to chat with people or schedule a short meeting specifically for a one-on-one conversation.

Make In-person Interactions Count

Many of us with hybrid schedules have time in the office for face-to-face interactions. Try to plan team lunches or special events around in-person days and make a point of stopping to catch up with someone whenever you see them. And take advantage of “Open Door Hours” to drop by someone's office for a quick chat. Plan a walking meeting when you know a colleague will be in the office. Be purposeful about making the most out of in-office days to build rapport and trust that carries over into remote workdays.

Technology Allows Us to Stay in Touch

Even if you aren’t a “techno wizard,” you can still learn to embrace new tools to connect with people virtually. Microsoft Teams and other platforms have social channels, so you can reach out to individuals or groups with shared interests. And remember, a great way to connect genuinely with others is simply to turn on your camera for a video call. This makes conversations much more engaging, because you can see someone’s facial expressions — regardless of whether you/they are having a bad hair day!

Use Your PATH Digital Tools

PATH has tools and information to help you deepen connections with collegues while working remotely. PATH Groups is a great way to keep in touch with others with whom you share common wellness interests. You can join an existing group or create one of your own.

And if you haven’t used PATH Shoutouts yet, give them a try! You can celebrate your team’s success or an individual’s contribution with coworkers whether they’re always in the office or working remotely.

Below are some quick links to helpful PATH resources.

Ultimately, building strong relationships in a hybrid workplace is about being intentional. By purposefully using your in-office days, leveraging PATH tools like Groups and Shoutouts, and making an effort to connect face-to-face (even via video calls), you can ensure physical distance doesn't become a barrier to meaningful connections. Remember, a thriving workplace is built on strong relationships — and a little effort goes a long way toward making you a connected coworker!
