Happiness is a many-layered thing! It includes positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning and accomplishments. And it varies from person to person. But for most people, true happiness isn't simply about being cheerful; rather, it’s a deeper sense of contentment and peacefulness.
That kind of happiness is meant to last. Think of it as your overall "climate" (i.e., your well-being) versus your "weather" (i.e., your daily moods). You can still be truly happy — even when life gives you a challenging, rainy day.
Lasting Joy from Purpose
While “passing” pleasures are nice, they usually aren’t tied to anything with a special meaning. Lasting joy, however, is connected to your sense of purpose. Purpose creates a more resilient foundation of joy in your life and can influence your actions, so they align with your values. When your actions match your beliefs, you begin to feel a sense of stable, long-term contentment that remains constant despite life’s ups and downs.
The Science of Gratitude
Practicing gratitude isn’t just positive thinking. “Gratitude actually strengthens the neural pathways associated with your well-being — a process science calls neuroplasticity,” explains Hayley Flott, PDRMA Wellness Consultant. “When you practice gratitude, your brain releases dopamine and serotonin — the ‘feel-good’ chemicals that naturally improve your mood. At the same time, it helps reduce stress by lowering your cortisol levels. By intentionally noticing what’s going right, you are physically calming your nervous system and building the resilience needed to maintain happiness even during difficult times.”
Beware of Joy Thieves
To remain happy day-to-day, steer clear of "joy thieves" that work against you. These are thoughts and/or actions that focus on what you lack, creating cracks in your emotional foundation. One of the most common joy thieves is comparing yourself to others, especially people who appear to be wildly successful and lead so-called “perfect” lives. You can prevent others from stealing your happiness by focusing more on your own progress and less on how you compare to others. If you find yourself struggling against joy thieves, take a break from social media and/or people who don’t support your true self.
Increase Your Happiness
If you want to level up your feelings of happiness, try some of these tips.
- Exercise every day! Physical activity increases your serotonin levels. You don’t have to go to a fitness center to benefit from it. Just take a walk!
- Get 15-30 minutes of sunlight daily. This helps align your internal clock and balances your cortisol levels. Cortisol is crucial for managing your body’s stress response, immune function, metabolism, blood pressure and sleep/wake cycles.
- Prioritize sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night. Adequate sleep can improve memory, focus and learning, while increasing energy and daytime alertness.
Try meditation. Regular meditation leads to reduced stress, improved emotional well-being, better focus and enhanced self-awareness.
- Practice self-compassion. It can reduce anxiety and depression, improve emotional resilience and help you cope better with stress.
- Listen to music. Music can instantly improve your mood and foster social connections through shared experiences.
You can be happier — and healthier — with a few simple changes to your daily routine. Find joy in the present and let happiness and contentment last a lifetime.
